Dumpling – A One-of-a-Kind Living Rug

Meet Aurora — although here on the farm, we know her as Dumpling, because she is such a wonderfully round sheep that she reminds us of a little dumpling!

Dumpling is a nine-year-old Texel Mule cross, and this beautiful round oval rug has been made using the very best parts of her fleece. Each rug is carefully handmade and wet felted, allowing the natural fleece to become part of a unique, hard-wearing and beautifully tactile rug.

Dumpling’s fleece is fairly soft, although it does have a naturally coarse feel to it, giving the finished rug plenty of texture and character. The natural curls and variation within the fleece make every rug completely individual, with its own beautiful combination of colour, texture and movement.

Dumpling is normally a very friendly and healthy girl. She has had a couple of health issues with her ears this year, and understandably she doesn't like me touching them anymore. Apart from that, she is her usual happy self and remains a lovely character here on the farm.

I particularly love this rug because it has been made from the best bits of Dumpling’s fleece. Rather than being simply a piece of fleece, it has been carefully transformed through the wet felting process into a beautiful, practical rug with a story behind it.

These wet felted fleece rugs are also very easy to look after. With the correct care and by following our washing instructions, they can be washed when necessary, making them a practical addition to the home as well as something truly special and unique.
